Lazy Susanʼs Fortress Line Transforms Home to Castle

Trending Now: Medieval Primitivism

NEW YORK, NY, August 2011 – Spoiler alert: this fall is going to be positively Medieval.  LS by Lazy Susan, a leading international brand of decorative accessories, lighting and occasional furniture is launching its new collections, 200 new products in all, at the International Gift Fair in New York, including a bold new hand-forged iron group called FORTRESS. Lazy Susan Creative Director Renee Wightman conjured up this deliberately primitive collection with her design team to speak to an emerging design trend: Medieval-Chic. Consider the pop-culture influences of series such as HBOʼs immensely popular, rough-hewn-yet-mystical “Game of Thrones,” Starz Networkʼs starstudded and slightly gritty interpretation of the timeless “Camelot” legend, and the theatrical release of an updated “Conan” this month. All share a new brand of glamirony.  Says Wightman, “Weʼre calling it the raw awakening in design. The idea is to create a look-twice effect by juxtaposing this hand-forged iron with sleek contemporary pieces, traditional cut-crystal and fine linens. It adds a whole new level of textural interest, and it just feels truly of-the-moment.”

The line consists of two sizes of drum-shaped tables, three styles of pendant lighting and a centerpiece-sized bowl. Everything has a smoky gray, aged patina thatʼs neutral enough for any interior. Visible rivets are part of the table design, and the lighting and bowl have raised nail heads. These, says Wightman, “were the upholstery tacks of the Middle Ages.” The pieces are also gently punctuated with rusted areas, adding warmth and authenticity.

FORTRESS TABLES: Combining rustic charm with a sophisticated silhouette, these drum-shaped tables have about the same dimensions as a classic garden seat, but with an updated look. Handcrafted of iron, with an aged finish and rivet details, the tables have a slightly sunken surface that results in a neat, tray-type top to contain whatever items are displayed on them. The larger version measures 19"d x 25"h and the smaller one is 13"d x 18"h. They are offered as a set of two.

COLOSSAL FORTRESS PENDANT LAMP: You donʼt need a moat to make your home your castle. You just need this banded iron hanging lamp from LS by Lazy Susan. Crafted especially for a long, lean Edison-style bulb (also offered through LS by Lazy Susan) this fixture would be a fitting anchor for a dining room, kitchen, home office or living room. It is 22” in diameter and 18” high with a 28” chain and matching canopy.

FORTRESS PENDANT LIGHTS: Rather diminutive in size but just as strong a style statement are the smaller FORTRESS pendants, one flared and the other bellshaped. Because of their size, these fixtures have a fairytale aspect to them. Think Excalibur re-crafted for the 21st Century. At 6.5”d x 7”h and 8.5”d x 8”h respectively, theyʼre styled for filament bulbs and come with matching chain and canopy for a complete look. Says Wightman, “You can see the touch of human hands just looking at these pieces. No two are ever alike and that makes for interesting interiors. It also means these designs work in lots of situations. I can see these in a Brooklyn loft or a Connecticut farmhouse; a Malibu beach house or a San Francisco restaurant. A lot of our work is handcrafted for just that reason. We always want to make compelling objects with lasting value.” This level of thought and purpose is typical of Wightman, the 2011 ARTS Award winner of the Product Designer of the Year title.

COLOSSAL FORTRESS BOWL: So large and sturdy it could be used by the fireplace for stylishly storing kindling, this bowl would also make an arresting centerpiece. 22” in diameter, this banded basket/bowl is studded with hand-wrought nail heads and finished with a rustic patina. Meet New Lazy Susan USA Designers at New York International Gift Fair

NEW YORK (August 3, 2010) – David Moses, CEO of Lazy Susan USA, has announced that the company has hired two new designers, Jason Pfaeffle and Yevgeniya Falkova. Meet Lazy Susan’s new design team led by VP/Creative Director, Renee Wightman, in their newly expanded exhibit space 2720 at the New York International Gift Fair.

Lazy Susan’s new designers will be at the Jacob Javits Convention Center during the New York International Gift Fair for a meet and greet. Join them at exhibit space 2720 on Monday, August 16.

Lazy Susan USA Nominated for Two 22^nd Annual ARTS Awards

Lazy Susan USA Launches Shopatron Program

NEW YORK (July 8, 2009) - David Moses, CEO of Lazy Susan USA, has announced that the company has launched a program from Shopatron that allows Lazy Susan’s independent retailers to complete an order placed on the company Web site.  The retailer integrated Web site launch coincided with the start of the July Market at America’s Mart in Atlanta.

Lazy Susan has enabled Shopatron to let the closest retail store fulfill the customer’s order if the item is in stock.  Local order completion allows for faster order delivery and the convenience of local in-store pickup.

“We are pleased to announce the launch of Shopatron,” said Moses.  “This program will provide our independent retailers with additional sales and an increase in traffic directed to their shops.”

LS by Lazy Susan Finds Inspiration Along the Dune Road

NEW YORK, NY, August 2011 – LS by Lazy Susan, a leading international brand of decorative accessories, is launching its new collections for fall decorating and holiday gifting. Joining the firmʼs core collection of decorative accessories, lighting, occasional furniture, mirrors and wall art will be three themed groupings of new, fashion-driven designs. A major theme, according to Lazy Susan Creative Director Renee Wightman, is the use of warm, organic textures, exhibited in her design teamʼs new DUNE ROAD collection. No passing interior design fad, “these textures are timeless because they come from nature, or take inspiration from it,” she says.

A passion for fresh, earthy materials and surprising textures shows up consistently in the Lazy Susan collections, but this season organic textures reach new heights of sleek yet warm modernism in the DUNE ROAD group. Some highlights include:

MUI NE DUNE VESSELS: By carving away the outer dark coloration of the mango wood in banded channels, revealing the lightness beneath, the artisan woodworker has created a texture that feels brand new but still harkens to the grain of the original wood. The irregular, slightly wavy channels are highly interpretive, and might also evoke rippling pond water or swirling wind patterns across a sand dune. This texture graces a sensuous vessel with a seriously compelling silhouette. The bold shape and texture allow it to stand alone as a sculptural object, or as a foil for dried arrangements. Mui Ne Dune Vessels are offered in small (10.5”h) and large (16”h) sizes.

THE NEW RAKUʼS: Ceramics, crafted from earthʼs most basic material, clay, and formed by human touch, are another nod to the organic modern trend. Known for going to great lengths in collaboration with skilled ceramicists to achieve unusual and profoundly beautiful glazes, Wightman and her team have conjured some rare raku bowls for Fall. Generously sized, luxuriously deep and glazed in stunning cream and gray raku that evokes crackled desert mud flats, FISHBOWLS offer up a crowning touch of hand painted bands of crackle glaze in either cool BLUE SURF or warm POPPY.

MODERN RELIC LAMP: In the lighting category, Lazy Susan offers a few great surprises this season, including this ceramic table lamp. Its base a juxtaposition of fluid curves with a rich, warm earthy coloration and a funky-chunky crackle glaze, this lamp is tall (46.5”) and slender. The perfect shade? A camel-hued woven linen-y fabric drum that adds yet another of natureʼs most enticing textures to the mix. Says Wightman, “Itʼs that mix of coarse and fine materials, natureʼs own rough or smooth surfaces combined with things touched, carved, sculpted or woven by human hands, that is what creates compelling objects with lasting value.” This level of thought and purpose is typical of Wightman, the 2011 ARTS Award winner of the Product Designer of the Year title.
